Brevet des collèges: does it have a concrete value?

Today, on the occasion of the Brevet blanc exam by several members of our editorial staff and in support of all our friends in high school who are taking their exams this year, we are going to talk about the Diplôme National du Brevet (more commonly known as DNB or Brevet) and its value, its weight, in one's professional career.

At a time when young people are often told that their Brevet is "worthless", as opposed to the exams that our ancestors found much more complex. So, are they right? Have the exams become simpler? Is the National Education not demanding enough towards the current generations? This is certainly not the general opinion at the doors of the college during exam periods... So, is this patent useful?

Also, by "useful", we mean here that it has a weight in the course of an individual. Thus, we can say that it is useful for several different reasons. First, it prepares students for the other tests they will have to face in their future lives. It is therefore a training to be seen as an opportunity to measure one's abilities.

It is also important because, for some students, it will be their only diploma for a lifetime. The brevet is therefore a validation of a school career, just like the baccalauréat for high school.

The pressure on students should not be underestimated. Indeed, although obtaining this diploma does not guarantee passage to the next grade, students are very often demanding of themselves and are also subject to the pressure added by their parents and the fear of "disappointing". Also, taking an exam, whatever it is, is a great psychological exercise that requires training in order not to succumb to pre-test anxiety.

Only, it can be considered as useless. Indeed, if we take up the vision of the beginning of the article considering that it has become "easy" to obtain the first diploma of one's life, it is easily conceivable to devalue it and thus to devalue the work of the nearly 200,000 students who took the brevet in 2021.

As such, one can imagine that the conception of diplomas and their value is a very subjective fact and that everyone will be free to conclude his or her vision of things.
