La Primaire Populaire : real citizen act or lost illusion?

For the presidential elections of 2022, the left is entirely dispersed between multiple candidates not wishing to converge. To overcome this problem, a left-wing citizen initiative has been launched: the Popular Primary. The objective is simple: to propose a vote, a primary open to all left-wing supporters to allow them to designate the left-wing candidate for the election. On the principle, it was an excellent idea, only, it made a total flop...


Indeed, it had started well. Even if the tenors of the left were distant from this primary, they were not completely opposed to it. An attempt at a debate was therefore possible. Subsequently, several events caused disruptions in the agenda of the primary. First, the ecological primary of Europe Ecologie Les Verts (EELV) totally collapsed the idea that this party would be open for the primary. Subsequently, Jean-Luc Mélenchon showed a firm opposition to this proposal, although quite high in the polls on the left. Clearly, at that time, all the left-wing candidates in the election were gradually withdrawing from the popular initiative.


Subsequently, the voters wishing to do so were called to vote to elect the common candidate of the left in 2022. Only, since then, no one, except for a few small candidates with little media coverage and Christiane Taubira were still in solidarity with the common ship. However, all the names were proposed to the ballot box this Sunday, January 30, 2022. No need to draw you a picture here, it is Taubira who won the primary ahead of Jadot and Mélenchon.


So, is there still a hope of union on the left? Nothing is less certain. At a time when the Macron quinquennium has definitely shifted the "traditional" political center of gravity (left-right), it is very difficult today to position oneself, and therefore to unite...
